How to trade gold (XAU/USD)

A plain, practical guide for traders in Nigeria — lots, leverage, margin, costs and the risk rules that keep beginners in the game.

xau/usd · one bar, one hourTARGETENTRYSTOP
A plan is three prices decided before the entry, not after.

Gold (XAU/USD) is traded as a CFD — you speculate on the price, you don't own the metal or coin. One standard lot is 100 oz.

Lots, leverage and margin

Margin is what your broker locks to open a position: (lots × 100 × price) ÷ leverage. At 1:200 a 0.10 lot needs $213.75. Use the margin calculator.

Size to a fixed risk

Decide the money you'll lose at your stop first, then let the position-size calculator pick the lot. Never size by how much margin you have.

Costs

You pay the spread on entry and an overnight swap if you hold. Factor both into every trade.

FAQ

Common questions

What are the actual steps of placing my first gold trade?

Set the direction and entry, then size the position before you click. Choose a stop distance in pips, convert your acceptable loss into a lot size with the position size calculator, and only then enter. Add a take-profit level if your plan has one. After the fill, check the margin used and confirm the stop is live on the platform.

How do I work out my lot size for a gold trade?

Divide the naira amount you are willing to lose by the pip value of your stop. On gold, one pip is 0.01 and one standard lot is 100 oz, so a 0.10-lot position moves about $1 per 10 pips. Use the position size calculator to convert that into naira, then round down so the risk stays inside your limit.

Where should I put my stop loss on XAU/USD?

Place the stop where your trade idea is proven wrong, not at a round number that feels comfortable. Gold can move fast around US data, so a stop inside the normal noise will be hit before direction is decided. Set the distance first, then size the position to fit it, using the position size calculator.

What margin will a small gold position actually tie up?

Margin depends on lot size and the leverage on your account. At 1:200 via the offshore entity, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin. Remember that leverage is a cap, not a setting to aim at, and that margin is not the same as risk: your loss is set by the stop, not the deposit held.

How do I fund the account and withdraw from Nigeria?

Funding routes listed for Nigerian clients include local NGN bank transfers, Visa and Mastercard debit cards, e-payments and crypto. Each has its own processing time and conversion step, so check the naira amount that actually lands before you commit. Withdraw back through a method in your own name to avoid verification delays.
